Furikake is a Japanese multi-purpose seasoning sprinkled on rice that varies by region — some include bonito flakes, salmon flakes, or chili. Trader Joe's took the most traditional five-ingredient version: white and black sesame seeds, dried nori strips, salt, and kelp powder. Released in 2020, it joined the ranks of TJ's most popular seasonings (alongside EBTB and Chile Lime) almost immediately.

Tasting notes: Nutty, toasted sesame is dominant. Dried nori adds umami and oceanic depth. Kelp powder reinforces that umami. Salt is moderate, integrated rather than aggressive. Crispy seaweed flake texture is part of the experience.
