Direct from the United States — Starbucks Caffè Verona dark roast ground coffee, 28 oz (794 g) club-size bag. Notes of dark cocoa and caramelized sugar. 100% Arabica, ethically sourced. The same Caffè Verona blend served in Starbucks cafés.

About This Product

Caffè Verona is one of Starbucks' most enduring blends — a dark roast originally created in 1975 for a Seattle restaurant under the name "Jake's Blend," later renamed for the Italian city that inspires it. The blend pairs Asia/Pacific and Latin American beans for a rich, full-bodied cup with a velvety mouthfeel and signature notes of dark cocoa and caramelized sugar. It's a "dessert coffee" by design, balancing bold roast intensity with a hint of natural sweetness that pairs especially well with anything chocolate.

This is the 28 oz (794 g) club-size bag — significantly larger than the standard 12 oz Starbucks retail bag you'll find in Korean grocery stores. The larger bag works out to better per-cup economics for daily home brewing. The grind is medium, suited for drip coffee makers, French press, pour-over, and moka pot. The bag is resealable and uses Starbucks' Flavor Lock packaging to preserve freshness once opened.

100% Arabica beans, ethically sourced through Starbucks' partnership with Conservation International. Roasted and packaged in the United States by Nestlé under license from Starbucks Coffee Company. Stays fresh for several months when stored properly (cool, dry, away from direct light).

The Caffè Verona Story

Caffè Verona has a longer history than most Starbucks blends. It was created in 1975, originally as a custom dark roast for a Seattle restaurant, where it went by the name "Jake's Blend." Customers loved it enough that Starbucks began hand-scooping the blend to order in stores, where staff and regulars knew it as the "80/20 Blend" — a reference to the original recipe ratio.

By the time the blend was officially released, it had earned its romantic naming. Verona — the Italian city of Romeo and Juliet, of opera, of falling in love — captured the smooth, indulgent character of the coffee. The notes of dark cocoa and caramelized sugar make it especially well-suited as a "dessert coffee," and it's been recommended for decades to pair with chocolate desserts, tiramisu, or rich pastries.

The blend itself draws from two coffee-growing regions: Asia/Pacific beans contribute the bold, full-bodied backbone, while Latin American beans provide balance and the foundation that makes the cup approachable. The result is a dark roast that's intense without being aggressive — strong enough for serious dark-roast drinkers, smooth enough for those who normally prefer medium roasts.

How It Compares to Other Starbucks Dark Roasts

Within the Starbucks dark roast lineup, Caffè Verona occupies a particular spot — neither the most aggressive (that's the brand's bolder single-origin Sumatra) nor the smoothest (typically the medium-dark French Roast):

  • vs French Roast: French Roast is roasted longer, giving a smokier, more intense char-forward flavor. Caffè Verona keeps more of the bean's natural sweetness intact, with the caramelized sugar notes coming through. Verona is generally easier to drink black; French Roast often benefits from cream.
  • vs Sumatra: Sumatra is a single-origin dark roast with earthy, herbal characteristics — more rustic. Caffè Verona is a multi-region blend that's smoother and more dessert-like by comparison.
  • vs Espresso Roast: Espresso Roast is engineered for espresso machines and tends to be sharper and more concentrated. Caffè Verona is more versatile — it works well across drip, French press, and pour-over without needing the pressure of an espresso machine to taste good.

If you've enjoyed Pike Place but want something darker and richer, Caffè Verona is a natural step up. If you've found other dark roasts too smoky or bitter, Verona's caramelized sugar profile makes it more approachable.

Brewing Recommendations

The medium grind suits multiple brewing methods. Adjust ratios to taste:

  • Drip coffee maker: 2 tablespoons (10 g) per 6 oz (180 mL) water. Most home machines hit the right strength at this ratio with Caffè Verona.
  • French press: 1:15 ratio by weight (e.g., 30 g coffee to 450 g water). Steep 4 minutes, then plunge. The dark roast's body and the cocoa notes come through especially well in a French press.
  • Pour-over (V60, Chemex): 1:16 ratio. Bloom for 30 seconds, then pour in stages over 3-4 minutes. Slightly cleaner cup than French press; lets the caramelized sugar notes show.
  • Moka pot: Fill the basket level (don't tamp). Brew over low heat. The Verona blend is well-suited to moka pot's concentrated, near-espresso strength — pairs especially well with steamed milk for a homemade latte.
  • Iced coffee: Brew at 1.5× standard strength for hot, then pour over ice. Or cold brew at 1:8 ratio for 12-18 hours, then dilute to taste. The dark cocoa notes hold up well over ice.
For consistency from a 28 oz bag, transfer 1-2 weeks of coffee to a separate airtight container and keep the main bag sealed in the refrigerator (never the freezer). Coffee absorbs moisture and odors — keep it well-sealed and away from strong-smelling foods.
Why the 28 oz Club Size

Most Starbucks ground coffee available in Korean grocery stores comes in the standard 12 oz retail bag. The 28 oz club-size bag (the size sold at US wholesale clubs like Costco) is roughly 2.3× larger and offers significantly better per-cup economics.

For a household that drinks 2-3 cups of drip coffee daily, a 28 oz bag lasts roughly 4-6 weeks — long enough to be a meaningful purchase, short enough to finish before the coffee loses peak freshness. The Flavor Lock resealable bag does a respectable job of preserving aroma over that period.

If you typically buy multiple smaller bags from a Korean retailer to keep up with daily consumption, this single bag generally works out cheaper per cup at our import-direct pricing. It's the format dedicated daily drinkers prefer in the US.

Storage & Freshness

Coffee is best within 4-6 weeks of opening when stored properly. The Flavor Lock bag uses a one-way valve and resealable closure to slow oxidation, but freshness still degrades over time once the bag is opened.

Best practices:

  • Store the unopened bag in a cool, dry pantry. Refrigeration is acceptable for unopened bags but not necessary.
  • Once opened, press out air before resealing each time. Store in the original bag, or transfer to an airtight container.
  • Keep away from direct light, heat sources (avoid storing near the stove), and strong odors (don't store near garlic, onions, spices).
  • Do NOT freeze ground coffee. Freezing introduces moisture every time you open the container, which damages flavor.
  • If you won't finish the bag within 6-8 weeks, consider splitting it with a friend, or transferring half to a smaller airtight container while keeping the rest sealed in the original bag.

The product is shipped to you with significant shelf life remaining. Best-by date is printed on the bag.

From Our First Customers

"My go-to dark roast since trying it at a Starbucks years ago. The 28 oz bag is the right size for our family — we go through it in about a month. The cocoa notes are real, especially in a French press. Korean grocery stores only carry the small 12 oz bags, so finding the club size has been a relief."

Daeun — Hannam, Seoul — Early Customer

"Bought this for daily drip coffee at home. Smooth dark roast — not bitter, not too aggressive. Pairs really well with a square of dark chocolate in the afternoon, which I think is the original idea behind the blend. The Flavor Lock bag actually does keep it fresh longer than the cheaper bags I'd been buying."

Wooyoung — Gangnam, Seoul — Early Customer

"Was hesitant about buying a coffee this size for direct import, but the math works out — significantly cheaper per cup than the 200g bags from Korean retailers. Bag arrived sealed, well-protected. Will reorder."

Hyojin — Bundang, Gyeonggi — Early Customer

"Caffè Verona is my husband's favorite Starbucks blend. He used to bring it back from US trips because the Korean grocery prices for the smaller bag were too high. Direct import at this size and this price point is a much better solution. Customs was clean."

Sora — Songpa, Seoul — Early Customer
