French roast beans, whole: taken well past second crack for a deep, smoky-sweet cup with low acidity and heavy body. Dark roasts show their oils on the surface of the bean, which is normal for this roast level.

Whole bean matters more with dark roast than with any other, because the aromatics that come out of a heavy roast are also the first to fade once ground.
